Cheating Or Callaborating

My teatcher Mrs pipe have must of gone extremley knocked out.Mrs pipe gave us an opportunitey of getting a better grade and to collaborate with eachother and let us step ahead.I started to think am I cheating or not.

As I walked aruond in a suprisingly way I started to figure out I am more engaged. Firstly I had some fuer more detailed ansers and of what I know. Second I had more strategies and resources and lots of more choice.Third of all I noticed at this point that everey one was collabrating and started to have more extrem writing and more ideas.

I think this beuatiful idea and collaboration and gives me like a boost of a mark makes my learning fun.I am proud that I am a consistent learner.

It was fun to watch my students feeling more engaged. It was really neat to watch students help each other and collaborate. Excellent post.

    Hello Jacob,

I appreciated reading about your experience with collaboration. I think that collaboration is not cheating – in fact, it is how most adults work out in the real world these days. Working together does create better learning – better ideas and better writing. Hope you enjoy the rest of you year with Mrs. Pipe!

So much of a student’s time in school is spent showing what you can do ‘all by yourself’. The real world is very different than that. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a career where you have to work without some level of collaboration and cooperation.

I hope that my own children will have similar opportunities to learn and build relationships.

    Jacob,

Isn’t it a wonderful experience to learn from your classmates? I’m sure that you all learned more by collaborating than you ever could on your own.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    Jacob,
I loved that your teacher is giving you choices and I love that you realized that you could learn lots and so much more when you collaborate with your friends.

    Jacob,
I am so impressed that you are considering the ethics of cheating and that of collaborating. Thinking about right and wrong is very important. I work with high school students on this same topic and I am guessing that you are not even in high school yet! Keep up the great thinking.

    Dear Jacob,

I am a second grade teacher in Wisconsin, and my second grade students are starting to blog too.

It is so exciting to read you blog entry! You are really thinking about your learning. Collaborating with other students is a wonderful way to learn more. Did you know that your friends are teachers too? You can learn from each other. The best part of working together is that it is fun!! I look forward to many more of your blog entries. May I add your blog page to my class blog?

Jacob, you describe the best effects of collaboration very well. Collaboration is definitely not cheating when it encouraged in class.I bet Mrs. Pipe is a wonderful teacher.

    Jacob:
Collaborating is not cheating. Cheating is when you, without permission take someone else’s ideas or answers and pretend they are your own. Collaboration is an equal, honest and allowed sharing of those ideas to make them better ideas and to create new ones. I’m glad it made you feel more engaged. Working with others often does because you are contributing to making something together that is better than the thing you could make by yourself. Keep on sharing.

You learned a key lesson- two heads are better then one. (and three, four, even 20 heads are even better) We all need to learn to work together and why it is important. I’d love to show your blog at one of my up-coming teacher workshops here.

My teachers can learn a lot from you!
    thanks for sharing

Everyday I work with people to learn things and to solve problems. That’s what life is all about. Keep learning to work with your classmate and other people, as its just about the most important skill you can have. Thanks for sharing!

Isn`t it odd that learning honestly had come to be considered a purely individual affair. Kind of makes you wonder what is most important: genuine communication, curiosity, and passion in learning or meeting the requirements of a more easily tested, evaluated and compared ‘proof of learning’.

Clearly your class is being nurtured into a dynamic, reflective and thoughtful community of authentic people.

    Congratulations! What a sensational experience!

    Jacob,

Collaboration is an important skill to develop. I need to use my collaboration skills every day in my job to facilitate team work and problem solving.

It is a wonderful opportunity for you to develop those skills in a classroom setting.

    Hi Jacob
I am very excited by your blog post. As a teacher it is great to see that you learned MORE because you could collaborate. It seems that you also were liked being able to take another shot at your test. And doing it in this way only deepened your understanding and your engagement with the work. You should be very please with you effort and proud indeed of your being a consistent learner.

I loved reading your blog post! It was great that you and your classmates were able to learn from each other as well as Ms Pipes. It is fun to work with others to help them get better and to allow them to help you grow too. It sounds as though you have a great class. Keep learning and keep sharing:)

[...] Recently, a student of mine (Jacob) wrote in his blog about an assessment that I administered. The assessment was to be done collaboratively. I know that teachers have been using group work and collaborative skills already. The difference with this type of activity was that I did not put the students in groups. Jacob called his blog – “Is it Cheating or Collaborating”. In 24 hours, this student received more than 15 responses from educators across the world. Can you imagine the authentic writing experience felt by this young boy? Read Jacob’s post here: http://jacob213.edublogs.org/2009/11/05/cheating-or-callaborating/ [...]

    Hi Jacob and Jacob’s teacher

I am an educator in Dunedin, New Zealand. I love what you guys are doing which is collaborating…not cheating. Cheating is when you copy someone’s else’s work. Collaborating is when you talk, discuss and work together…what you’re doing here. Good luck, Sarah
